Dating Scams in Russia?

I know of someone pulling a scam on my friend…problem is they don’t realize it. My main question is why would they have a yahoo.com address yet supposedly live in Russia. I want to look into this further and possibly report it but is it possible she is actually in the U.S.(due to her email address) pretending to be in Russia and looking to scam money? i mean…it seems that other countries end with things other than dot com.

Sorry to hear that it happened with your friend!
It doesn’t matter where the person lives currently on this planet. U can choose any site to register your e-mail address. And those who lives in Russia and r registered in fair way as they live over there can also get the address ended like @yahoo.com(but u can choose the language of commands). The same is about hotmail@com. So u can’t trace where these persons live in fact.
I’m Russian and I also use one of dating sites….I’ve heard a lot of stories about scams….But(don’t mean to sound offencive to your friend) seems that some persons want to be scammed….cause they act without any common sense…
The main mistake of US guys : they use to think that Russian girls r very poor…so they believe that we have no money for web cam or for cell phones ….for traveling… American men don’t know enough about visa getting process….
Once I have talked with one guy…. he has sent money to the person he had never seen, never had heard her voice through phone(she told she was so poor)…just her pic.I assume there were a company of Russian(probably not Russian guys) who did all that stuff. I heard that FBI and Russian police worked together and once they finally found those scammers. But usually it’s impossible to find them. Best advise ( if that girl sounds fake) - just forget and move on! Never send money!!!
Unfortunately Russia don’t have such sites as US have, where background check can be done….to check if this person is real.
I have a friend in NY, he is retired policeman, he gave me a lot of useful advises concerning on-line dating. It’s also important how often he(or she) use to talk to u, at what time…etc. U can ask a person to send u a copy of her passport.
Actually people can be scammed (or defrauded) not only on internet. On-line dating is almost the same as in personal . U can never know for sure what kind of person u date.
P.S. to check IP adress is a good idea, but I doubt that it would help. What r u going to do then? But if he already has sent money - just report to police.

Does anyone have info about online dating scams with women involving Lagos Nigeria?

I have a friend that we believe was just taken for alot of money by someone in Lagos Nigeria. I am wanting to know if this has happen to anyone? what did you do in this situation? If anyone knows what I can possibly do to help my friend get her money back/ justice for what this person did to her?

Get money back?. HA!.. that ain’t gonna happen.

You should report scams to:

*** Your local police station. They may also advice you what to do and where to report further.

*** FBI. They have a special Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3)
http://www.ic3.gov/

*** Nigerian scams you can also report to a special organization created in Nigeria to fight 419 and other financial cybercrime, EFCC: The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
http://www.efccnigeria.org

*** Russian scams you can (and should!) report to the following 2 places:

1) FSB, aka FSS (Federal Security Service). This organization is similar to FBI in Russia.
http://www.fsb.ru/contact/contact.html
Please note, this website is in Russian. You can use online translator, for example http://freetranslation.paralink.com/ to translate the page (recommended). The e-mail you can use is fsb@fsb.ru.

2) Another place to report Russian scammers is MVD of Russia, aka MOI (Ministry of the Interior of Russia). This is like the headquarters of Russian Police:
http://eng.mvdrf.ru/
Send your message through “Public Reception” center. They have a special so-called department “K” dedicated to fight cybercrime.

russia girls that scams americans in the internet?

I have a story, personal. A russian woman starting to write to me off of one of those sights. Im 57 and she was 27. I figured it would be fun but not even approaching serious. Within 2 weeks she was proclaiming her love for me, wanted to marry me, and could not live her life without me. Of course I immediately became suspicious. Suddenly one day she writes that she had discovered that she had relatives here in the USA that she didnt know about that were going to give her money so she could supposedly come visit me here. The catch was that she wanted the money sent to my bank account and then transfer it to her. I didnt know her last name so I played along like I was excited about the prospect. So she tells me her last name and date of birth. Aha, I google her name and it immediately referred me to a web site that lists the names of Russian women who have scammed vulnerable American men. Guess what, her name was on the list. I knew something was up from the get go because of the age difference. Why in the world would a very attractive 27yr old Russian woman want with a 57 yr old man? I guess some of the old farts fall for this crap.

Dating scams from Nigeria on Yahoo Personals?

I was contacted by a man on Yahoo Personals who claims to be on a business trip in Nigeria. He found a way to incorporate his direct
e-mail address so that it would not be blocked by Yahoo Personals. His profile is no longer active. He claims to care for me more than seems normal after only a week. He has not asked me to do anything
regarding money.

This could be a scam. My ex-wife answered an add on Yahoo personals from a man in Nigeria and to say the least he got several hundred dollars from her not to mentioned a very large phone bill that cost her thousands of dollars.
