My elderly father is stupidly thinking of going to Russia as a result of one of these online dating services. He believes everything he reads online. Is there a website that can educate him on scams relating to this.

okay I just ended an online “relationship” with a russian woman. I am 99.9% sure it was a scam. my question is the next time I am contacted by a russian woman should I ignore her because of the risks, are all russian women who contact you really out for your money. Also even if she were real I really dont have much of a chance to get her out of Russia anyway because I hear it is impossible for her to obtain a visa, is this true?

Obviously not all russia women who contact you first are our for your money. But you should be on alert if your ad is on yahoo personals for example, you get a letter from a girl which profile says she’s from US, for example - and in her letter she says she’s actually from Russia. That kind of beginning can lead in most cases to scam.
In general - don’t believe if somebody process love to you after 2-3-4 letters, you can google lines from her letter and see if it appear in some scam sites. DO NOT SEND MONEY! So this is the most important thing. Ask her for her home numberand try to call her to see if she’s for real.
You can ask for the home address - and check it in google if it exists or to order flower delivery for example - for the special date - and they can make a picture of her with the flowers.
As for visa - if she has previous visas she can get visa to your country but if you’re from the US it’s more difficult than to Europe. To the US to tell the truth it’s 80% impossible. But you can travel to her city to see her. That’s what most people recommend to do - you can see not only her, but her circle of friends, family so to know more about her.
And if everything is ok you can apply for fiancee visa - or what type of visa exists in your country to bring a spouse.
If you don’t have enough patience to go through this process - this risky process - and more that that - you don’t have enough finances (travelling, bringing her to your country, paying for all needed documents are not cheap), you then better try to find somebody local.

why.. do they fear that wester men wont love for who they are?

It’s not just Canadian men. They’ll scam from anyone. It’s not love, it’s the promise of love in return for using you as an ATM. Save yourself the trouble and don’t even communicate with them.

Unfortunately there is not any database that tracks scammers. You have to filter through them yourself. I just moved from Wooster, Ohio to Phoenix, Arizona and found the quantity of scams and fakes to be much larger. Don’t give out any personal information if you aren’t sure.

Using name James Holt, from Gaston, OR. A widower with a small daughter, drills oil wells all over the world. Nice looking man in pictures, 46, though looks older, balding with white goatee. Tall and well built, strong looking. Claims to be from Ireland. I have an investigator’s report that indicates this email has been used for fraud before. Please warn others about the dangers of internet dating. The pictures are not always the people who are responding!! Thank you.

These scams are constant, as fast as one dissapears they pop up somewhere else. It is virtually impossible to stop them. All we can do is what ypu have done, be careful and try to give as much information out on here and to friends .We will never stop it but we can help tp protect people.

Dating Scams in Russia?

I know of someone pulling a scam on my friend…problem is they don’t realize it. My main question is why would they have a yahoo.com address yet supposedly live in Russia. I want to look into this further and possibly report it but is it possible she is actually in the U.S.(due to her email address) pretending to be in Russia and looking to scam money? i mean…it seems that other countries end with things other than dot com.

It doesn’t matter where the person lives currently on this planet. U can choose any site to register your e-mail address. And those who lives in Russia and r registered in fair way as they live over there can also get the address ended like @yahoo.com(but u can choose the language of commands). The same is about hotmail@com. So u can’t trace where these persons live in fact.
I’m Russian and I also use one of dating sites….I’ve heard a lot of stories about scams….But(don’t mean to sound offencive to your friend) seems that some persons want to be scammed….cause they act without any common sense…
The main mistake of US guys : they use to think that Russian girls r very poor…so they believe that we have no money for web cam or for cell phones ….for traveling… American men don’t know enough about visa getting process….
Once I have talked with one guy…. he has sent money to the person he had never seen, never had heard her voice through phone(she told she was so poor)…just her pic.I assume there were a company of Russian(probably not Russian guys) who did all that stuff. I heard that FBI and Russian police worked together and once they finally found those scammers. But usually it’s impossible to find them. Best advise ( if that girl sounds fake) - just forget and move on! Never send money!!!

I have a friend in NY, he is retired policeman, he gave me a lot of useful advises concerning on-line dating. It’s also important how often he(or she) use to talk to u, at what time…etc. U can ask a person to send u a copy of her passport.
Actually people can be scammed (or defrauded) not only on internet. On-line dating is almost the same as in personal . U can never know for sure what kind of person u date.
P.S. to check IP adress is a good idea, but I doubt that it would help. What r u going to do then? But if he already has sent money - just report to police.
