How far is “too far” in a biblical, christian, dating relationship?

Where should the line be drawn when both have made the committment to save themselves til marriage? Is it a personal conviction? Is kissing too far? Please share your views.

You have both set yourself up with a difficult task your natural urges are to give in to your baser instincts. You need to discuss with each other on where the line is for you. Understand that there are different passion levels to a kiss, and different locations of a caress (a shoulder is not the same as a knee and each person is different). I would suggest that you pray for guidence and look into meeting with your spiritual leader for couciling. The big tell is if you feel like your going too far stop, take a break, and discuss how you feel with your partner.

Is there a definite stopping point physically when in a Christian dating relationship?

How far is too far? What constitutes sex? Is there a point of no return? Is there a point when it gets too far emotionally? At what point is it is sin? Will God be disappointed if we have accidentally passed this line already?

Too far would be past first base, or second depending on one’s interpretation.

Sex is anything that involves penetration.

You only pass the point of no return when you know in your heart that you should have stopped and didn’t. Hard to answer that one effectively without knowing the details (which are personal to you).

Sin is when any action that you committed would be seen as such in the eyes of God. If you had premarital sex, but then married, that would be a moral issue; one that I believe would be forgiven. I believe God is very forgiving of any sin, if you are truly remorseful.

I am not a Rabbi or a priest or a minister. Don’t be afraid to ask one of the professionals. They won’t judge you.

What would you teach teenage girls in a Christian youth group about dating relationships and marriage?

They range from 13-17. My thinking is that they should just keep their focus on Jesus and not worry about dating or marriage until they know to some extent, God’s plan for their life, so that they don’t waste their time and get hurt by a boy/man who either doesn’t care about them, or just isn’t ready for a relationship like that. There is one guy in the youth group. He is 17 also. I talked this week about how we’re all, who believe, brothers and sisters in Christ and that they should treat each other as such because they are young. They asked about relationships and now I have to teach a little more about that aspect and I’m not really sure how to do it. Your insights would be welcome as long as they’re mature.

You can do the thing where you glue two pieces of cardboard together - you tell them that when we have sex we become one flesh and it binds us together not just physically but psychologically and emotionally and spiritually.

Then rip the two pieces of cardboard apart. Tell them that this is what happens when you break up with someone after having sex with them - you leave parts of yourself with them and you will never be the same. It will be a mess and they will feel awful about themselves and it will be hard to put themselves back together again.

You can tell them that that’s why sex has to be reserved for marriage where two people have committed themselves to each other for a lifetime so that hearts won’t get broken.

You can also use the analogy about sex being like fire - wild, warm and exciting - when used in it’s proper context: a fireplace. The proper context for sex is a marriage. But take the fire out of the fireplace and put it on the couch, and it is no longer beautiful and warm and inviting, but destructive and out of control. And that’s what their life will be like if they treat sex casually and don’t reserve themselves for marriage. Not just the girls but the guys too.

The Christian dilemma during relationships before marriage?

Just going to throw it out there: how do people generally handle “trying” to be a Christian, or even just be religious in any regard, and also meet the obvious temptations that go along with dating + relationships?

Well my advice would be to date ppl that have the same beliefs as you do.. so you can have someone that isn’t going to go somewhere you really don’t want to go. like to bed…
Meet in group settings or when going out on a date go with church members. don’t put yourself in situations that would leave you or the person you are dating vulnerable to temptation. Which is always going to be there. Do things that will keep your focus on God. If you have the chance to see a movie don’t go to one that has a lot of sexual content that is going to get you hot and bothered. Most important pray that God will send you someone.

What is a good example of biblical dating?

The Bible seems to have a lot to say about marriage, but what about dating? Does anyone have a good biblical example of dating that can be applied to modern life?

The bible doesn’t speak on dating because it’s a pretty new concept. The bible does say to treat guys as brothers and girls as sisters. Aside from sex, there’s not a huge difference in the way that brothers and sisters act versus a husband and wife. A lot of people ask “how far is too far?” but I think that’s the wrong question to ask. You should be asking “what is the right thing to do here?” For example, I don’t recommend kissing until you are at least somewhat serious and even then, keep it short. Long kisses lead to wandering minds. Also, if you get physical too early in a relationship, “just kissing” is going to get old after a while. I’ve said a lot and tried to combine a lot of talks on dating into a short paragraph so I’m sorry if it doesn’t all make sense. Try reading Randy Pope’s “Finding Your Million Dollar Mate” if you want more. It’s short. And there’s even some pictures. I like books with pictures.
