Carbon dating?

I trust carbon dating but some of my friends don’t. Does anyone have any rational explanations for carbon dating that would help them to understand and trust it better?

*They were arguing against carbon dating for dinosour footprints.

They were right to, though maybe for the wrong reason

C14 has a half-life of only 5700 years. Which means that if you are testing anything, more than, say, 100,000 years old, there is not enough C14 for you to assay accurately. Dinosaurs died out 65,000,000 years ago. There are other dating methods you can use, but not C14.

Second, C14 only works on things that were once alive, like bones, or wood. You would never use it directly on a footprint, though maybe you could test something that you found at the same strata, and therefore had reason to think was the same age as your footprint.

If you want a good, scientifically accurate article about radiometric dating, the following was put out by an association of scientists who are also Christians.

carbon dating the earth
do any physicists that understand how carbon dating works believe that the earth is less than 6000 years old?

like any at all? If they do then what is their explanation?

If you are really interested, try the book The World That Perished(I think it is on Amazon). It gives a long science-based explanation that you are free to not agree with.It is too long to explain here, but it covers carbon dating and other ways to arrive at the age of the earth. Mostly though, it helps to see things from another point of view. I am not am not a scientist, so I can only tell you to read the book.

Carbon dating Not Proof for an Old Earth

carbon 13 dating
Carbon dating, what is it in laymans terms?

I’m not a scientific guy but i love reading about science and finding out where we come from evolution etc. I come from Northern Ireland where there’s a lot of people out there who still believe the earth is 10000 years old and i discuss this with them from time to time. One thing they always raise if that Carbon dating is apparently ’stupid’ to use as it’s not exact. I know this and know it’s out by about 60000 years or so. What i can’t understand (As don’t know about protons and carbon-13/14 etc).
M question is could someone give me an explanation of what Carbon Dating is to someone who doesn’t 100% have a scientific background? If you explain terms then i can follow it better!

Cosmic rays hitting the atmosphere results in the creation of carbon-14. That’s an unstable material which happens to have a half-life of around 5,700 years. That means, after that stretch of time, half of it will have decayed into other stuff. This rate is regular.

As a land animal goes around minding its own business such as eating, drinking and breathing, it necessarilly also ingests C-14 from the atmosphere. This ingestation also happens for terrestrial plants. For as long as they live, that supply of atmospheric C-14 keeps getting topped up.

When the organism finally kicks the bucket, the ingestation of atmospheric C-14 stops, and the supply present begins decaying at the known rate, and breaks down into other stuff in known proportions.

Therefore, it’s sometimes possible to use the known rates and proportions as a form of dating. In simple terms, if half the C-14 has been changed into the daughter product, then that there organism dropped dead around 5,700 years ago.

<>

These would be claims made by people who don’t understand carbon dating, and decide to misinform other people about it regardless of that. It certainly isn’t “out by about 60000 years or so”! The maximum range for C-14 is no more than 50,000 years as, by then, the level is too low to accurately measure. When the opportunity presents itself to test carbon dating against other forms of dating, including the written historical record in some cases, it’s generally found to be reliable. However, in some cases problems can arise through, for example, unnatural or indeed natural contamination of probes.

Radioactive decay is known to not be as reliable as clockwork. This is because it happens to be even more regular. That’s why, these days, the most accurate clocks in the history of the planet are atomic clocks, and mere clockwork or battery ones get corrected in line with them. Exactly the same principles are involved with C-14 dating and other forms of radiometric dating.

Some people are very fond of drawing up lists of supposedly “wrong” datings. If you look at them, these usually contain large amounts of things that can’t be reliably carbon-dated in the first place; for example, aquatic critters. They can’t be sensibly dated because they don’t happen to imbibe C-14 directly from the atmosphere, and the levels contained in water are strongly variable. Sometimes, however, the techniques may be applied in order to find out something or other else of interest.

dating carbon
Can carbon dating tell the difference between an object from on century and one from a century earlier?

Say you have a pyramid built in 1500 BC, will carbon dating be able to tell if another pyramid was built in 1600 BC?

Unfortunately, carbon dating methods are completely inaccurate and anyone who uses them uses them with a preknowledge of when they expect the object they have to fit into either the geologic or historic timescale. Carbon dating makes certain assumptions that cause it to be in error almost at every point.

The essential concept is that the ratio of Carbon 14 which is an isotope of carbon 12 on the planet is a constant. It says that as the amount of the two in relation to each other should vary and that varience should tell you something about when that object was formed. Scientist know within confident bounds the half life of the carbon 14 isotope and can measure its presence in the object. Contrasting that number with what they assume was the total amount at the objects formation they can arrive at an estimated date of formation and or death in some cases. However, this relies on a lot of assumptions, including variables in decay rates based on outside influences, the total starting amount of c14 and c12, etc and etc.

So, unfortunately, trying to date two pyramids so close in age would be impossible for radiocarbon dating methods and anyone who says otherwise is making a quess, assuming they know anything about carbon dating or is lying.

carbon dating problems
i don’t understand this carbon dating problem?

How old is a fossil that has 6.25 grams of Carbon 14 remaining and has 43.75 grams decayed to Carbon 12 using 5,700 years as a half life? Contrast that with a Carbon 14 half-life of 1900 years.

Your question seems a little wrong. For one thing, Carbon 14 doesn’t decay into Carbon 12. Carbon 14 decays into Nitrogen 14 (a stable element).

Carbon dating works by comparing the ration of Carbon 14 to Carbon 12 in contrast to what the object would have if it is alive. But we don’t know what the ratio is in this problem. (Usually Carbon 14 percentage of the total carbon is a very small amount in living creatures.)

Based on this and the incorrect wording, I would guess that the idea of the problem was that there were originally 50 grams (6.25 of Carbon 14 and 43.75 of Carbon 12) of Carbon 14. That would mean 12.5% of the Carbon 14 had not decayed.

But 12.5% = 1/8 = (1/2)(1/2)(1/2). The fact it was halved three times, means that it is old enough to have decayed three times the 5,700 years, or about 17,100 years in total.

If Carbon 14 had a half-life of 1900 years, then it would be three times that, or about 5,700 years in total.

radiometric dating problems
can you help me with the radiometric dating problem?

Radioactive iodine is a bi product of some nuclear reactors. Its half life is 60 days. that is after 60 days intitial of radioactive iodine will have decayed to half the original amount. suppose a nuclear accident occurs and releases 20 grams of radioactice iodine. How long will it take the radioactive iodine to decay to a level of 1 gram

y= Ce is useful!

thanks!!!

The equation is

A(t) = A(0)e^(-kt)

where A(0) is the initial amount, A(t) is the amount after t days, t is the time in days, and k is the rate constant.

We know that the half life is 60 days, so A(t) will be half of A(0) when t = 60.

A(0)/2 = A(0)e^[-k(60)]

1/2 = e^(-60k)

ln(1/2) = -60k

k = -ln(1/2)/60 = 0.693147181/60 = 0.011552453

Now that we know k, we can solve for t,

1 = 20e^(-0.011552453t)

1/20 = e^(-0.011552453t)

ln(1/20) = -0.011552453t

t = -ln(1/20)/0.011552453 = 2.995732274/0.011552453

= 259.3156857 days
