I have a bunch of antique photographs. I am most interested in the 5 photographs I have of Oil Derricks from Western Canada. I really wanted to find out what they are worth and I also want to sell them. I know the photographers name, approx date, and the condition is pretty good on all of them. Western Canada is known for their oil, and I did contact a museum about them, but he told me I should get them appraised. Im in New Brunswick and there is no where here to get it done, so Im looking for a place online that is Very inexpensive or preferably free… considering they might not be worth much. But maybe they are. The photos are all 8×10s, originals, and in Black & White… Id also like to find an online site that has a lot of buy/sell of antique items that is not EBAY.. any help would be great!! Thanks~

Do your own appraisals based on research - an appraiser is only useful if the item is potentially valuable. Check sold prices on ebay or other sites for comparables. Check to see if any photographers are famous. Bring to an artist to get an opinion on the skill of the photographer. If the subject is identified, value is higher than if it is unidentified photographs. Only after you have a suspicion that the photograph is valuable should you seek out the opinion of an appraiser.

Photography is a very difficult media for appraisers, so expect to be unable to find much.
